Tree Hut Watermelon Whipped Shea Body Butter Dupe

Formula;

phase A

  • 5% glycerin

  • 0.3% sodium carbomer

  • 75% distilled water

phase B

  • 4% lotionpro 165

  • 1% cetyl alcohol

  • 5% shea butter

  • 5% caprylic capric triglyceride

  • 1% dimethicone

phase C

  • 0.5% liquid germall plus

  • 0.2% vitamin E

  • 2% watermelon extract

  • 1% watermelon fragrance oil

Directions;

  • Combine all ingredients in phase A in a heat safe beaker and mix. Sodium carbomer will be chunky.

  • Combine all ingredients in phase B in a separate heat safe beaker.

  • Tare scale and weigh phase A. Wright down the weight. Some water may evaporate when we heat it up and we will need to replace that.

  • Place both phase A and B in a water bath and heat until phase B is all melted and both phases are around the same temperature. (water bath: on the stove top fill a pan with about an inch of water over medium heat)

  • Weight phase A again and replace any water that evaporated.

  • Pour phase A into phase B and mix with an immersion blender

  • Add in coloring of choice. I used some pink mica powder and Red No. 6 D&C Lake

  • Once cooled to 100°F/40°C add in all the ingredients in phase C and mix

  • Pour into jar of choice

pH adjusting; No pH adjusting needed. Changed the pH could thin emulsion by deactivating the sodium carbomer.

Benefits/Purpose of each ingredient

glycerin - humectant that hydrates the skin

sodium carbomer - is a pre-neutralized synthetic polymer that can be used to thicken, suspend and stabilize cosmetic formulations. Requiring very low concentrations, Carbomers are often used to adjust the viscosity of cosmetic preparations. They dry quickly and are not film forming. Sodium Carbomer does not require the alkaline catalyst that all other Carbomers require. Sodium Carbomer is already neutralized, and in the sodium carbomer form.

lotionpro 165 - blends oil and water together. is a combination of Glyceryl Stearate and PEG 100 Stearate. Can create light, fluffy and very thin emulsions. Unlike most emulsifiers that can thicken emulsions, lotionpro 165 does not.

cetyl alcohol - thickener and emollient (moisturizes skin)

dimethicone - provides long lasting skin smoothness. increases slip and glide of emulsions and moisturizes the skin.

shea butter - serves as a great moisturizer.

caprylic capric triglyceride - emollient ester. A light weigh oil like substance that moisturizes the skin but feels far less greasy than natural oils

liquid germall plus - preservative

watermelon extract - high in antioxidants, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C, which can help reduce skin inflammation, improve skin pigmentation, and promote healthy collagen production.

Substitutions;

substituting ingredients will change the final feel, viscosity, and overall effect of final product. percentages and formulating procedure may need to change with substitutions. these substitution suggestions are just suggestions and have not been tested to work.

  • glycerin - propylene glycol, propanedial, sodium PCA or other humectant

  • lotionpro 165 - you can try a different emulsifier like emulsifying wax NF or ritamulse SCG, but the final viscosity and feel of the product will be way thicker.

  • sodium carbomer - any carbomer will work just make sure you adjust the ph to 6-7.5 for carbomer to activate.

  • caprylic capric triglyceride - any other oil you would like

  • shea butter - mango butter or other soft butter

  • dimethicone - cyclomethicone or other silicone or silicone alternative

  • liquid germall plus - euxyl PE 9010 or any other preservative active between 6-7.5

  • watermelon extract - any other extract of choice
