I wouldn't say this experiment was a fail because the product still works. It just doesn't work great for what it's meant to be, a lip balm. It works much better as a lip gloss. Although, I would still prefer it to be more moisturizing. I also wish it had a bit more pigment to it. So next time I make it I am going to use more pigment. I probably won't dilute it in the triglyceride like I did in this experiment though. Also I used a new ingredient in this recipe, polyamide-3. It is really a unique ingredient. I definitely recommend clicking it's link and reading more about what it does. I'm excited to try it in different products.
Formula;
heated phase
18.5% meadowfoam seed oil
5% polyamide-3
cool down phase
Directions;
combine all ingredients in the heated phase and heat in a water bath until everything is melted
the polyamide-3 can be a struggle to melt so give the formula a few mixes while it is heating to help the polyamide-3 melt.
while everything is melting mix the red no. 40 FD&C lake with a teaspoon of caprylic/capric triglyceride and set to the side
once everything is melted take off the heat and add in the vitamin E and as much of the red no. 40 FD&C lake/triglyceride mixture as you would like until you reach your desired color
pour into squeeze tubes and let return to room temperature
thoughts; this is supposably a lip balm, but it seems to be more of a lip gloss to me. I don't think it is moisturizing enough to be considered a lip balm. It does make a nice gloss though. I do think it was a mistake using the candelilla wax though. I think replacing it with a soft butter like shea butter would of been a much better idea. Overall the product is okay, but definitely needs some improvement, but it does pass as a simple lip gloss though.
Benefits/Purpose of each ingredient
caprylic/capric triglyceride - non-greasy and light weight emollient ester. helps moisturize and soften lips
meadowfoam seed oil - a lot like jojoba oil. It is very similar to our skins sebum which makes it easily absorbed and less greasy feeling. helps moisturize and soften lips
polyamide - 3 - used to gel and thicken lip balm. also helps create a beautiful glossy look. I definitely recommend clicking here and reading more about this ingredient. It can be used for so many different things.
candelilla wax - used to thicken lip balm (definitely don't use this, try using some shea butter or increase the percentage of the polyamide-3 by 1% or 2% and use more meadowfoam seed oil for whatever percentage is left.)
vitamin E oil - antioxidant to help keep oils stay fresh and can help with relieving chapped and dried lips.
red no. 40 FD&C lake - used to add a light red tint to lip balm
Substitutions;
substituting ingredients will change the final feel, viscosity, and overall effect of final product. percentages and formulating procedure may need to change with substitutions.
caprylic/capric triglyceride - c12-15 alkyl benzoate or plant oil
meadowfoam seed oil - jojoba oil or another oil of choice
polyamide-3 - no sub
candelilla wax - definitely don't use this, try using some shea butter or increase the percentage of the polyamide-3 by 1% or 2% and use more meadowfoam seed oil for whatever percentage is left
vitamin E - no sub, but you can leave out.
red no. 40 FD&C lake - another lip safe pigment or leave out
