Firming Body Moisturizer / Lotion

Updated: May 13, 2022

I have received so many requests from you all asking for a firming lotion. So here it finally is. This can be used on the whole body. Legs, neck, butt, arms, stomach, face, chest. Where ever you'd like. I hope you enjoy :)

Formula;

water phase

oil phase

cool down phase

Directions;

  • being by adding in the glycerin and xanthan gum soft and mixing them together until the xanthan gum is hydrated in the glycerin.

  • then add in the rest of the water phase ingredients.

  • next weight out the oil phase ingredients in a separate beaker.

  • heat both phases using a water bath to 70c/158f and hold for 20 minutes or until everything is melted. I notice when I use glyceryl stearate it takes a long time for it to melt. So it may take longer than 20 minutes and I find best results if you mix it every once in a while, while it's heating up

  • pour your water phase into the oil phase and mix with a high sheer mixer.

  • once cooled you can add in your cool down ingredients.

  • mix one last time and once fully returned to room temperature package up your moisturizer

PH adjusting; natural ph fell right around 5.5

Results: This moisturizer didn't turn out as thick as I was hoping for. If you watched my last video (or read the last blog post) you'll remember me making a face cream with olivem 1000. I used the same emulsifiers at the same percentages as I did in this moisturizer, but for some reason this one came out a lot thinner. It was thinner even before I added the cool down ingredients, so I don't think it was any of them that effected the viscosity. So I made another batch of this lotion using all the same ingredients except I used macadamia nut oil instead of pumpkin seed oil. This new batch came out much thicker. Not as thick as the face cream with olivem 1000, but still thicker than the previous batch of firming body lotion using pumpkin seed oil. So I'm not sure if maybe it was the change of oil that effected the end viscosity or if maybe my scale was off and I added to much water or something. Idk for sure, but let me know if you've ever experienced oils changing your products viscosity. I know oils all have different HLB values, but I thought that only effected emulsification stability, not viscosity. Definitely enlighten me down in the comments if you know anything about this. Please and thank you :)

What I would change; I do wish it was thicker so it rubbed in the skin faster. In my experience I've noticed when working with olivem 1000 you want a thicker product so it reduces the soapy effect. The face cream I made with olivem 1000 definitely rubs into the skin much faster than this lotion. The more I've used this lotion the more I've noticed how long it takes to rub in, but its still great. It would probably be better if I used a different emulsifier, because as you know, I'm not a huge fan of olivem 1000. I also would leave out the xanthan gum because as I've mentioned a lot, I'm not a huge fan of using it in leave on products. I just wanted to show you how to incorporate it into a moisturizer in this recipe. :)

Benefits/Purpose of each ingredient

  • glycerin - humectant (hydrates the skin) and is used to hydrate the xanthan gum.

  • xanthan gum soft - serves as a stabilizer for emulsion. you only need to use this if you aren't using any other stabilizers like cetyl alcohol or glyceryl stearate

  • sodium lactate liquid - humectant (hydrates the skin)

  • allantoin - has moisturizing, soothing, anti-irritating properties and stimulates healthy, normal tissue formation

  • olivem 1000 - ecocert emulsifier used to help thicken and emulsify oil and water together

  • glyceryl stearate - ecocert emulsifier used to help stabilize emulsion

  • cetyl alcohol - fatty alcohol that serves as a thickener and emollient to moisturize the skin

  • pumpkin seed oil - emollient to moisturize the skin

  • luxglide N350 - "natural" alternative to dimethicone. used to add slip and glide to moisturizer and to help alleviate any soapy effect that is typically caused by olivem 1000

  • actigym - mimics the effect of endurance exercise training by increasing adiponectin release and enhancing mitochondrial activity. It improves body tone and redefines the silhouette by reducing abdomen and thigh contour, arm sagginess, and decreasing body weight. It mimics the effect of endurance training with great results that are increased when combined with physical activity.

  • pepha- tight - it functions as a skin tightener which provides immediate tightening to the skin. It has been shown to protect human fibroblasts from oxidative stress, simultaneously increasing the formation of collagen-l thereby promoting a long term tightening effect through the strengthening of the skin's connective tissue.

  • calendula extract - commonly used in cosmetic applications to help accelerate healing. Rich in flavonoids and saponins, calendula’s contituents can help promote healing and repair and prevent tissue degeneration. Flavoinoids and saponins help protect the skin from damage causing free-radicals and aid in the metabolism of proteins and collagen during the healing process to help balance the skin and reduce irritation.

  • vitamin E oil - an antioxidant and a nutrient that is best known for maintaining skin health. Helps soothe and prevent dryness, itching, flaking, and burning. It also helps promote the look of a youthful, radiant complexion.

  • spearmint essential oil - for fragrance. I thought mint was perfect for a firming lotion

  • liquid germall plus - preservative

(may need to change percentages of the substitutions. substituting ingredients will change the final feel, viscosity and over all end product)

  • glycerin - sodium lactate liquid, sodium PCA, propylene glycol, or 1,3 propanedial or any other humectant you like.

  • xanthan gum soft - any other xanthan gum or you can leave it out if you are using cetyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate or any other stabilizer.

  • sodium lactate liquid - glyceirn, sodium PCA, propylene glycol, or 1,3 propanedial or any other humectant you like.

  • allantoin - I don't know of any other ingredients that compare but you can leave out

  • glyceryl stearate - oliwax LC or any other stabilizer.

  • cetyl alcohol - a different fatty alcohol like cetearyl alcohol or behenyl alcohol

  • pumpkin seed oil - a different oil of choice

  • luxglide N350 - dimethicone

  • actigym - no sub

  • calendula extract - another extract of choice or leave out

  • spearmint essential oil - peppermint essential oil or any other fragrance or leave out.

  • vitamin e oil - no sub, but you can leave out.

  • liquid germall plus - euxyl pe 9010, optiphen plus, leucidal sf complete, etc. any water soluble broad spectrum preservative that works in this formula
