DIY Face Wash for Beginners, THE RIGHT WAY! (Salicylic Acid, Cucumber Oil, & Rose Spirulina)
This week I needed to restock on face wash. So I decided to make a few different types, but all with the same surfactants. I used a blend of Foaming Apple (INCI: Sodium Cocoyl Apple Amino Acids) as my anionic surfactant. This was actually one of the first surfactants I ever used and I've been a fan ever since. I also used Coco Glucoside as my non-ionic surfactant. Along with BioSuga™ Mulse C80 (INC: Sorbitan Oleate Decylglucoside Crosspolymer). I recently learned that BioSuga™ Mulse C80 can help increase foam while making your product more mild. It also does a great job solublizing oil. So if you incorporate BioSuga™ Mulse C80 into your foaming products formula, you can solublize 1% oil. For all of these face washes I actually have 1 anionic surfactant and 2 non-ionic surfactants. (I wanted to experiment with this blend). Feel free to change out the surfactants and experiment with different blends.
First, I made a Salicylic Acid Face wash using this Salicylic Acid Solution from makingcosmetics.com. This is a liquid Salicylic Acid that has already been dissolved. Which makes formulating with it, much faster and easier! Usually you need to heat salicylic acid to dissolve it and also mix it with a solvent like polysorabate 20. Directions;
In a sanitized container, combine all ingredients in phase A and mix until powder has dissolved.
In a separate sanitized container, combine all ingredients in phase B, mixing after the addition of each ingredient and dissolving each powder.
Slowly pour phase A into B while mixing.
Check and adjust pH to 3.5 - 4.5
Let sit overnight to let foam settle before pouring into desired bottle. Check pH again the next day to make sure it didn’t drift.
Next, I made a Creamy Cucumber Face Wash with Cucumber Essence Water, which smells exactly like cucumbers, Cucumber Seed Oil, & Cucumber Extract (Glycerite) ORG (INCI: INCI: Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Glycerin, Aqua). I also used Garden Party Green Mica from MadMica.com to make it this gorgeous Green!
Directions;
In a sanitized container, combine all ingredients in phase A and mix until powder has dissolved.
In a separate sanitized container, combine the BioSuga Mulse C80 & cucumber seed oil and mix well. Then add in the rest of the ingredients in phase B and mix.
In another sanitized container, combine all the ingredients in phase C and mix until all the powdered ingredients are fully dissolved.
While mixing, slowly pour phase B into phase C until fully incorporated.
Then slowly pour phase A into phase B/C while mixing.
Check and adjust pH to 4.5 - 5.5
Cover and let sit overnight to let the bubbles settle. Then pour into desired bottle.
Then I made a Pink Rose Face Wash with Rose Hydrosol (INCI: Rosa Damascena Flower Water) and Campo Pink, Hydrophilic (INCI: Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract, Melia Azadirachta Flower Extract, Aqua, Corallina Officinalis Extract, Betaine, Coccinia Indica Fruit Extract). This is a great way to naturally color your products pink. Keep in mind, since these are natural colors they will change over time and may not be the most stable when selling. It also works best in opaque containers.

In a separate sanitized container, combine all ingredients in phase B, mixing after the addition of each ingredient and dissolving each powder.
Slowly pour phase A into B while mixing.
Check and adjust pH to 4.5 - 5.5
Let sit overnight to let foam settle before pouring into desired bottle.
I've been dying to try this Blue Spirulina Extract (INCI: Water (and) Propanediol (and) Spirulina Platensis Extract) I got from makingcosmetics.com I figured it would make such a gorgeous blue color and I was right! This face wash turned out so pretty.

In a sanitized container, combine all ingredients in phase A and mix until powder has dissolved.
In a separate sanitized container, combine all ingredients in phase B, mixing after the addition of each ingredient and dissolving each powder.
Slowly pour phase A into B while mixing.
Check and adjust pH to 4.5 - 5.5
Let sit overnight to let foam settle before pouring into desired bottle.
For the last one, I figured I would color it purple, for all the purple fans. I have this Campo Violet, Hydrophilic (INCI: Melia Azadirachta Flower Extract (and) Coccinia Indica Fruit Extract (and) Aqua). It's similar to the Camp Pink I used before, but it's purple! Again, the color may fade overtime and it's best to store your products in an opaque container when using these botanical extracts with natural pigments.

Slowly pour phase A into B while mixing.
Check and adjust pH to 4.5 - 5.5
