Last week I hand a brain blast and an amazing idea to make a body shimmer came to mind. I can't tell you how many requests I've had to make one. Honestly, I never put too much thought into how to make one, so I'm not entirely sure how I came up with it. I was thinking of video ideas and this formula came to mind and I instantly had to test it out. Here is the formula....

Formula;
phase A
1% siligel
3% glycerin
3% propanedial
phase B
20% strawberry essence water
71.5% distilled water
Directions;
combine all ingredients in phase A and mix
pour both ingredients in phase B into phase A and mix until thickened
thoughts; This formula turned out great. The only issue is that when I sprayed the product it came out as a single stream rather than a mist. This is obviously an issue with my packaging and not the formula. So I need to find a misting cap that works with the shimmer. The only issue I had with the formula is there wasn't enough shimmer. So I did one other experiment....
With my second experiment I increased the pearl basics from 0.5% to 1.5%. I also increased the percentage of siligel from 1% to 2%. I figured since I added more pearl basics I would need more siligel to help with suspending the shimmer, but after testing it I think 1% siligel would be enough. Oh, I also used rose water instead of strawberry essence, but that doesn't effect anything other than the scent of the product. So here is the second formula I tried....
phase A
phase B
20% rose hydrosol
69.5% distilled water
Directions;
combine all ingredients in phase A and mix
pour both ingredients in phase B into phase A and mix until thickened
thoughts; I liked this formula much more since it had way more shimmer. If I made it again I would use only 1% siligel. So if you try it, I recommend this second formula using 1% siligel.
final thoughts; the sensory feel of both these products is great. It doesn't feel stick on the skin and the shimmer shows up wonderfully. The only issue is the packaging I'm using, but if that doesn't both you then it's perfect.
Benefits/Purpose of each ingredient
siligel - used as a suspending agent for the shimmer (pearl basics)
pearl basics - shimmer ingredient
glycerin - humectant that hydrates the skin. used to hydrate the siligel in the formula and helps the shimmer stick to the skin
propanedial - humectant that hydrates the skin and helps alleviate the stickiness from the glycerin. it also helps hydrate the siligel in the formula and helps the shimmer stick to the skin
euxyl PE 9010 - preservative
strawberry essence water / rose hydrosol - scent
Substitutions;
substituting ingredients will change the final feel, viscosity, and overall effect of final product. percentages and formulating procedure may need to change with substitutions.
siligel - xanthan gum soft
pearl basics - Jill or any other shimmery pigment/mica
glycerin - propanedial, propylene glycol, sodium pca, or other humectant
propanedial - glycerin, propylene glycol, sodium pca, or other humectant
strawberry essence water / rose hydrosol - distilled water, a different hydrosol or essence water
euxyl PE 9010 - any other water soluble preservative like optiphen plus, euxyl k 903, geogard ECT, tristate eco, etc. Don't use liquid germall plus as it isn't approved for aerosol products (although I'm not sure if this matters for misting products, but just to be safe, I don't recommend using it)
