Formula;
phase A
32.3% oil (i used sunflower oil)
2% watermelon oil
2.2% silica dimethyl silylate
3% shea butter
mica (I used 0.30 grams per 250 grams of scrub)
phase B
7% glycerin
5% polysorbate 20
phase C
1% watermelon extract (oil soluble)
1.5% optiphen
44.6% sugar
0.4% poppy seeds
1% watermelon fragrance oil or watermelon flavor oil
Directions;
Using a heat safe container combine the oil, watermelon oil and mica together in phase A, then follow with the silica dimethyl silyate and mix. Then add in the shea butter and mix. Make sure you are wearing a respirator mask when working with silica. It is an extremely light weight powder that goes EVERYWHERE. Honestly I hate using it because of that, but it's amazing and so unique!
place in a water bath on medium heat until the shea butter melts and the silica is completely mixed in. You may need to mix every once in a while to get the silica to fully dissolve.
while phase A is heating grab another container and combine both ingredients in phase B and mix.
once all the silica is mixed into phase A and the shea butter is melted removed from heat.
slowly pour phase B into phase A while mixing. You will notice phase A will start to thicken. This is normal.
keep mixing until phase A and B are fully combined. Let return to room temperature
add all ingredients from phase C into phase A/B mixing after each one is added.
pour into desired container. product can be used immediately
pH adjusting; no pH adjusting needed as this is anhydrous. It does contain glycerin which is water soluble, but it's part of the inner phase, not the outer phase. It's a water in oil emulsion which is different from an oil in water emulsion (lotions, conditioners, and creams are oil in water emulsions. Oil is part of the inner phase and water is the outer phase.)
Benefits/Purpose of each ingredient
sunflower oil - moisturizer
watermelon oil - moisturizer
silica dimethyl silylate - Hydrophobic fumed silica that thickens oils and polyols and suspends particles in oils. Provides also thickening properties in the presence of polar solvents (e.g. dipropylene glycol, triethyl citrate or propylene carbonate). Forms transparent gels in oils (e.g. mineral oil, castor oil, plant oils). Thickens oil phases in emulsions and increases viscosity and gloss of various oils by forming oil-gels
shea butter - moisturizer
glycerin - humectant that hydrates the skin.
polysorbate 20 - is used as a high HLB emulsifier in combination with a variety low HLB emulsifiers to cover a wide range of oil in water, and water in oil emulsion systems. Alone, it is an excellent solubilizer of essential oils, a wetting agent, viscosity modifier, stabilizer and dispersing agent. Use it in the creation of linen and room sprays, body sprays and other products where oils need to be solubilized in water. In this formulation it is being used to emulsify the glycerin into the oil phase.
watermelon extract (oil soluble) - rich in potassium, Vitamins A, C, and B, amino acids, and lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that helps minimize the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots.
optiphen - preservative for anhydrous formulas
sugar - exfoliant
poppy seeds - exfoliant and aesthetic. Looks kinda like watermelon seeds once it's mixed into the scrub
Substitutions;
substituting ingredients will change the final feel, viscosity, and overall effect of final product. percentages and formulating procedure may need to change with substitutions. these substitution suggestions are just suggestions and have not been tested to work.
sunflower oil - any oil should work fine
watermelon oil - any oil should work fine
silica dimethyl silylate - no sub
shea butter - mango butter
glycerin - I'd imagine any glycol should work, like propylene glycol or butylene glycol but I honestly can't say for sure. I am duping a product that also use glycerin, so I'd just stick with that. glycerin is super easy to find and inexpensive. propanedial may also work
polysorbate 20 - the product I'm duping used poly 20, so I'm not sure if poly 80 work work as a sub, but maybe. Try it and see.
watermelon extract (oil soluble) - any oil soluble extract
optiphen - phenonip optiphen plus may also work
sugar - dead sea salt
poppy seeds - they used kiwi seeds in the product I'm duping, but idk where to get those.
