This is the exact formula of the Emulsified Body Scrub I used to Sell on my Website. TaraLeeSkincare.com
Formula
Phase A
10% Ritamulse / Ecomulse
10% Cetyl Alcohol
20% Shea Butter
56.8% Sunflower Oil
Phase B
1% Optiphen
2% Fragrance Oil
0.2% Vitamin E
Optional Mica Powder for color
Equal Parts Sugar
1,600 gram Recipe
Phase A
80 Ritamulse / Ecomulse
80 Cetyl Alcohol
160 grams Shea Butter
454.4 grams Sunflower Oil
Phase B
8 grams Optiphen
16 grams Fragrance Oil
1.6 grams Vitamin E
optional - mica powder
800 grams Sugar
Directions;
Combine all ingredient in phase A in a heat safe mixing bowl.
Cover with foil and place in a water bath (Water bath; fill a pan with about an inch of water and place over the stove top on medium heat)
Come back and mix until everything has melted. Remove from Heat
Mix periodically as it cools
Once cooled to 104°F / 40°C you can add in the phase B ingredients
I like to add in the optiphen, fragrance, and vitamin E first, then the mica powder and lastly I will add in the sugar. I add in 200 grams of sugar at a time and mix until it's all incorporated.
Cover and let sit over night.
The next day you will notice it has hardened up. I like to mix it with a spatula to soft it before scooping into my jars.
When you go to use the scrub it softens with the touch of your body heat and the shower heat, since normally out bathrooms warm up while we shower. The consistency of this scrub will change depending on how hot or cold your environment is. You can change around the percentages of Ritamulse SCG and Cetyl alcohol until you get the consistency you like (replace percentage with sunflower oil). This is the consistency that I like and it works perfectly in my environment. This WILL melt in the mail in warmer temperatures. You do not need to check or adjust the pH as this does not have a pH since it is made with only oil soluble ingredient.
Benefits/Purpose of each ingredient
Ritamulse / Ecomulse - emulsifier, hardener/adds structure to scrub, and emollient
Cetyl Alcohol - hardener/adds structure to scrub & emollient
Shea Butter - Emollient and hardens product a bit
Sunflower Oil - Emollient (helps moisturize the skin)
Optiphen - preservative
Vitamin E - antioxidant that helps keep oils fresh longer.
Substitutions;
substituting ingredients will change the final feel, viscosity, and overall effect of final product. percentages and formulating procedure may need to change with substitutions. these substitution suggestions are just suggestions and have not been tested to work.
Ritamulse / Ecomulse - Emulsifying Wax NF, Polawax, Olivem 1000 or other waxy emulsifier. (these will change the viscosity and hardness of scrub) Do experiments by making small batches to see what you like and what works for you.
Cetyl Alcohol - cetearyl alcohol, behenyl alcohol, stearic acid (I haven't tried these in this formula. Stearic acid specifically will probably add to much drag to the product, but you can try it.) or you can use more Ritamulse SCG in place of the Cetyl Alcohol. You will just have to do experiments to see what you like.
Shea Butter - you can use any butter you want, but it will change the hardness of the scrub if you do.
Sunflower Oil - any carrier oil of your choice.
Optiphen - Phenonip or Euxyl PE 9010 (any broad spectrum preservative that is oil soluble)
Vitamin E - no sub, but you can leave out.
