How to Make Spray on Moisturizer; Aloe & Cucumber

It's summer and it's hot! I live in Ohio and it is so humid here! Literally as soon as you step outside you start to sweat. Even though its unbearably hot, I have been spending a lot of time outside this summer and a lot of time swimming. I noticed something though, every time I get out of the pool my skin is so dry from the chlorine. It's too hot to put on lotion cause I will immediately sweat it off and I don't like the feeling of that. So I thought it would be an awesome idea to make a light weight spray on lotion. I specifically wanted this lotion to have soothing and hydrating ingredients since I will be using it after sun exposure.

I didn't come up with this idea it was actually inspired by the blog swiftcraftymonkey. Susan made a spray on lotion there. I seen the recipe about a year ago, but had no reason to make it, until now. Thank you Susan! This isn't the exact recipe she used, I mixed it up. So if you wanna check hers out click here.

Formula;

water phase

oil phase

cool down phase

Directions;

  • measure and combine all ingredients in the water phase

  • in a separate beaker, measure and combine all the ingredients in the oil phase

  • weigh your water phase (including the beaker) and write down how much it weighs

  • cover both phases with aluminum foil and heat using a water bath

  • once both phases have reached 155 degrees fahrenheit for 20 minutes remove the water phase from the water bath and weigh it

  • replace any water that has evaporated (typically it's only less than a gram)

  • now remove the oil phase from the water bath and immediately pour the water phase into the oil phase, not the other way around!

  • mix immediately with an immersion blender

  • as it cools come, back periodically and give it a mix

  • once the formulation has returned to room temperature add the cool down ingredients

  • mix the formula by hand one last time to make sure all ingredients are incorporated evenly and then pour into a spray bottle

Benefits of each ingredient;

  • aloe vera liquid - soothing, hydrating, and calming to the skin

  • rose water - great for dry and mature skin types, gives your product a lovely rose scent and is a great ingredient for soothing the skin.

  • vegetable glycerin - hydrates and locks in moisture

  • allantoin - has moisturizing, soothing, anti-irritating properties and stimulates healthy, normal tissue formation

  • btms 50 - cationic surfactant that moisturizes skin and works as an emulsifier and thickener

  • olive squalane - non-greasy oil soluble emollient that is capable of mixing with sebum present on the skin. This may help reduce the viscosity of sebum to minimize its greasy feel. this is a light weight clear oil with no odor.

  • liquid germall plus - preserve's product

  • chamomile extract - has anti-inflammatory properties and helps soothe skin from irritation

  • cucumber Extract - soothes skin, moisturizing, has vitamin C, vitamin K, and potassium, vitamin A, vitamin B6, thiamin, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, and manganese.

  • hydrolyzed wheat protein - its anti-irritant and protective properties give skin a smoother, softer feel. Its film forming benefits help maintain an optimum moisture balance in the skin and hair

Exact formula I used; (makes 2 ounces)

water phase

oil phase

cool down phase
