Formula;
phase A
67.3% distilled water
8% glycerin
phase B
4% BTMS 50 (INCI: Behentrimonium Methosulfate (and) Cetyl Alcohol (and) Butylene Glycol)
3% cetyl alcohol
10% any plant oil of choice ( I used apricot kernel oil)
5% butter (I used shea butter)
phase C
1% fragrance oil of choice
0.2% vitamin E (INCI; Tocopherol)
0.5% liquid germall plus
800 gram recipe / batch;
phase A
538.4 grams distilled water
64 grams glycerin
phase B
32 grams BTMS 50
24 grams cetyl alcohol
80 grams any plant oil of choice ( I used apricot kernel oil)
40 grams butter (I used shea butter)
phase C
1% fragrance oil of choice
0.2% vitamin E (INCI; Tocopherol)
0.5% liquid germall plus
Directions;
In a heat safe beaker combine all the ingredients in phase A
In a separate heat safe beaker combine all the ingredients in phase B
Tare scale and place phase A on the scale and take note of how much it weighs. We will be heating up both phases and some water will evaporate from phase A. We will need to weigh phase A again after heating and replace any water that evaporate.
Cover both beakers with some aluminum foil and place them both in a pan with about an inch or so of water. Place pan on the stove top over medium high heat and heat until all of phase B melts.
BTMS 50 can sometimes be a struggle to melt. So make sure you have enough water in your pan to cover all of the oil phase. Also come back and mix periodically to help it melt.
Once all of phase B is melted and both phases are roughly around the same temperature remove phase A and place on scale. Add back in any water that evaporated.
Now you can remove phase B from heat and pour phase A into phase B
Mix with a high sheer mixer like an immersion blender. Come back and mix periodically until lotion starts to thicken.
Once lotion has thickened and cooled to under 100°F / 40°C you can add in the phase C ingredients mixing in between each ingredient you add.
Let cool to room temperature then check and adjust pH to 4.5 - 5.5
Pour into desired bottle. I made a DIY pipping bag by pouring lotion into a plastic baggie, cutting off a little bit of a corner, and squeezing the product into a bottle.
Tip: If you make a really large batch pour lotion into a mixing bowl before adding in the phase C ingredients and mix with a spatula.
pH adjusting; natural pH was around 6.25 I didn't take note of how much pH buffer I used, but I believe it was only 2 or 3 drops and it got the pH to 4.95
Benefits/Purpose of each ingredient
glycerin - humectant (hydrates the skin)
BTMS 50 -
cetyl alcohol - Emollient and thickener. Used to thicken and moisturize the skin.
I used apricot kernel oil - moistures the skin, but you can use any oil you want.
butter (I used shea butter) - moisturizes the skin, but you can use any butter of choice.
vitamin E - antioxidant
liquid germall plus - Extremely easy to use water soluble preservative. Best preservative to use for beginners
Substitutions;
substituting ingredients will change the final feel, viscosity, and overall effect of final product. percentages and formulating procedure may need to change with substitutions. these substitution suggestions are just suggestions and have not been tested to work.
BTMS 50 - any other waxy emulsifier of choice. Emulsifying wax NF, Ecomulse / Ritamulse SCG, Olivem 1000 or Montanov 68 MB
cetyl alcohol - other fatty acid or fatty alcohol or choice. cetearyl alcohol, behenyl alcohol
I used apricot kernel oil - you can use any oil you want.
butter (I used shea butter) - any butter of choice or leave out and use oil or distilled water in place of it.
liquid germall plus - euxyl PE 9010, geogard ECT, Euxyl K 903, Tristate Eco (I don't recommend optiphen or optiphen plus for beginners in emulsions. They often destabilize emulsions)
vitamin E - you can leave it out
