DIY Body Wash for Beginners

Formula

phase A

  • 6% Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI)

  • 30% Cocamidopropyl Betaine

phase B

  • 52.50% Distilled Water

  • 10% glycerin

phase C

  • 0.5% liquid germall plus

  • 1% Fragrance Oil or Essential Oil

1,500 gram recipe;

phase A

  • 90 grams Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI)

  • 450 grams Cocamidopropyl Betaine

phase B

  • 787.5 grams Distilled Water

  • 150 grams glycerin

phase C

  • 7.5 grams liquid germall plus

  • 15 grams Fragrance Oil

Directions;

  • combine both ingredients in phase A in a heat safe container.

  • combine both ingredients in phase B in a heat safe container.

  • create a water bath by filling a pan with an inch or so of water and place on medium heat. Place both beakers in the pan. If both beakers don't fit in one pan use two pans.

  • Heat until the SCI completely dissolves into the cocamidopropyl betaine. This will turn into a thick gunky slime like paste.

  • Phase B doesn't need to be any specific temperature. (we just heated it up to help dissolve the SCI when we combine both phases)

  • Pour phase B into phase A and mix. It will take a while for phase A to completely dissolve into phase B. You might have to let it sit overnight.

  • Once product has cooled to under 100 degrees you can add in the phase C ingredients and mix.

  • Body wash should be clear and the pH should be around 5. You can use water soluble dyes to color the body wash.

pH adjusting; natural pH was around 5. no pH adjusting needed.

Benefits/Purpose of each ingredient

glycerin - humectant that hydrates skin.

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate - anionic surfactant. creates lather and foam. Ecocert approved surfactant

cocamidopropyl betaine - amphoteric surfactant. creates lather and foam Ecocert approved surfactant

liquid germall plus - preservative

Substitutions;

substituting ingredients will change the final feel, viscosity, and overall effect of final product. percentages and formulating procedure may need to change with substitutions. these substitution suggestions are just suggestions and have not been tested to work.

liquid germall plus - any water soluble preservative; e.g., euxyl PE 9010, optiphen plus, geogard ECT, Euxyl K 903, Tristate Eco, etc.

cocamidopropyl betaine - any other liquid amphoteric surfactant. E.g. lauramidopropyl betaine, disodium cocoamphodiacetate, or other surfactant of choice. (not sure how they will react with SCI)
