personal thoughts on odor control; I don't think zinc ricinoleate really helps eliminate odor. Although many deodorants don't typically work for me. It's very difficult for me to find one that works, so I'm not really the best person to give an opinion on this ingredient. So I had my boyfriend try it out, every deodorant he's ever tried has worked for him, even the deodorant I made last time. But this did not seem to mask any odor for him. Just because it didn't work for us, that doesn't mean it doesn't work as not every ingredient works for everyone. This was just out experience. I will continue to use it here and there to see if my thoughts change, but as of now, it hasn't works
personal thoughts on the application; I thought this deodorant was way to oily, but my boyfriend didn't think it was. I do use a more dry deodorant everyday and his deodorant is more on the wet side, so I can see why he didn't mind it, he's use to a more wet feeling deodorant. It wasn't oily to where it was like greasy and gross feeling it just took a while to dry. Obviously this is due to the fact that this is an anhydrous recipe which is exactly why I ordered some cyclomethicone to try using instead. So I will be sharing a deodorant recipe similar to this, but with silicones and I will be sure to share my experience and thoughts on that one as well. I do think I could eliminate some more of the oiliness by adding in more arrowroot powder, so if you try this recipe increase the arrowroot powder percentage. try 10%-15%.
Benefits/Purpose of each ingredient
zinc ricinoleate - is known as a "natural" ingredient to absorb odor molecules
beeswax - used to harden deodorant stick
behenyl alcohol - used a hardener for deodorant stick
IPM - emollient ester used to help eliminate greasiness in deodorant stick
c12-15 alkyl benzoate - emollient
coco-caprylate/caprate - emollient with more of a watery feel compared to c12-15 alkyl benzoate
caprylic/capric triglyceride - emollient
arrowroot powder - texturizer to help deodorant feel a bit more dry
magnesium hydroxide powder - acts as an absorbent
Substitutions;
zinc ricinoleate - no sub
beeswax - another hard wax like candelilla wax
behenyl alcohol - stearic acid or cetyl alcohol
IPM - another emollient ester or silicone
c12-15 alkyl benzoate - another emollient ester or silicone
coco-caprylate/caprate - another emollient ester or silicone
caprylic/capric triglyceride - another emollient ester or silicone
arrowroot powder - corn starch
magnesium hydroxide powder - you could just use arrowroot powder or corn starch
(you could replace IPM, c12-15 alkyl benzoate, coco-caprylate/caprate, caprylic/capric triglyceride with silicones and you would have a much less greasy feeling deodorant stick)
