I’ve been trying to make a peel-off face mask from scratch for months! I know the two main ingredients you need for it to work is Diatomaceous Earth and Sodium Alginate aka Algin. I think the issue lies in the type of Diatomaceous Earth I have been using. I purchased mine from Amazon and it is food grade. If you compare it to any peel-off mask base, it’s much darker in color. Which is what makes me think the grade of Diatomaceous Earth I have is wrong. I think I need a light colored kind that is maybe more cosmetic grade rather than food grade. I did notice that makeyourown.buzz sells it, so I will purchase some from them and give it another try. It is possible that the grade of Sodium Alginate I have is also wrong, but we won’t know for sure until I try a different Diatomaceous Earth. So for now I am just going to use this peel-off face mask base I bought from Makesy.
Also, full disclosure, I am now an affiliate with Makesy. So if you purchase anything from Makesy, use my links and I will get a small commission off of your purchase at no cost to you. For example, if you spend $120 on Makesy, I make $12 off the purchase. So it really adds up and is a great way for me to make side income, which, who doesn’t love that! I think it’s amazing I’m able to do this with some suppliers because I send so many people to these websites and I love that I can actually get something in return from some of them. Even if you aren’t planning to purchase the item I link to, if you just use the link to get to Makesy.com and add whatever you want to your cart, I will still get the commission. As of right now Makesy.com aromantic.co.uk and amazon.com are the only sites I am an affiliate with.
About Peel-off Base
Makesy recommends to use at least 80 -100% of this base in your formula in order for the mask to peel-off properly.
They recommend mixing 2.5 tsp of powder with 2.5 tsp of warm water and mix until there is no clumps.
When I used the mask I just used room temperature water and I still had quite a few clumps, but I really don’t think the clumps effect the peeling effect, so if you have clumps, it’s okay, but it’s better to use warm water to help avoid clumping as it’s a much more pleasant experience if it doesn’t have clumps.
Also it’s almost impossible to get a satisfying peel-off in one swipe. For me, I just have to peel the mask off in pieces. The way that I’ve seen these masks used is in the spa while the client is laying down. This way you are able to put a much thicker layer on, which makes peeling the mask off easier. Overall I really like this mask because of how easy it is to use and customize. It’s fun trying to come up with different powdered ingredients to add in and this mask left my skin feeling so soft. I enjoyed it way more than I expected. It feels so cool and refreshing while you are applying it and taking it off. The only think I don’t like is trying to get a grip on the edges to pull it off. I feel like the picking is not good for my skin.
What you can add to Peel-off Mask Base
Makesy describes this Peel-off Mask Base as
“An organic, hydrating, powder mask that can be boosted with beneficial ingredients and enhanced with clays, muds, natural powders, eco glitters, and micas!”
So we know from this description it’s okay to add clays, muds, powders, eco glitters, and micas to the mask, but could we add a little bit of essential oil? Or maybe a bit of carrier oil? Maybe there is something else I’m not thinking of. So I got some more inspiration from this video titled “Natural peelable mask” by the YouTube channel The Institute of Personal Care Science, which I definitely recommend their channel, they are a great resource for information. I noticed in this video, Belinda also used a base, but she added in some carrier oils and essential oils into the base as well, which was exactly the answer I was looking for! You can totally add oils to this Peel-off Mask base, which makes customizing this base so much funner! Another ingredient category you could add in is just anything oil soluble, so bisabolol, Coenzyme Q10 (liquid form or powder), oil soluble vitamin C ester (tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate), vitamin E, and also powdered vitamins like DL panthenol or Niacinamide. I was a little hesitant about using niacinamide at first, since it is pH sensitive, so that is also something you need to consider when choosing ingredients. How will it react once you add water? Well I tested out some niacinamide in the mask and dissolved the mask in water and took the pH. Which the pH was around 6.5 which is totally a safe pH for niacinamide. As long as the pH isn’t below 5 or above 7 then you can use niacinamide. I also thought of adding in some retinol, since I have oil soluble retinol, but the pH would be too high. So that is definitely something you need to consider when choosing ingredients.
So I came up with 3 different masks. I’ll be sharing 2 of them in this post and then I will be sharing the 3rd one in this months patreon exclusive video.

Keep mask stored in powder form. If you mix it with water it will harden to a gel. Only mix with equal parts of warm water when you are ready to use the mask.
How to Use Mask;
Mix powder with equal parts warm water and mix until there are no clumps. Apply an even thin layer on desired area of body. (Can be used on face or body.) Mask takes about 10-20 minutes to dry. Once you see it drying along the edges the mask is ready to peel off. Do not let it sit until it dries completely or else it will be hard to take off. Peel once the edges start turning white and dry.
