DIY Beginner Friendly Jelly Scrub

Formula;

phase A

  • 10% glycerin

  • 2% xanthan gum soft

phase B

  • 83.5% distilled water

  • 0.5% liquid germall plus

  • 4% bamboo stem powder


400 gram recipe

phase A

  • 40 grams glycerin

  • 8 grams xanthan gum soft

phase B

  • 334 grams distilled water

  • 2 grams liquid germall plus

  • 16 grams bamboo stem powder


Directions;

  • Combine all ingredients in phase A and mix. (if using mica powder add in at this time)

  • Add the distilled water into phase A and mix until thickened and gelled.

  • Then add in the liquid germall plus and mix followed by the bamboo stem powder and mix until everything is well combined.

  • Check and adjust pH to 4.5 - 5.5.

  • Add in water soluble dye at this time if desired.

- I divided mine up and made multiple different colors

pH adjusting; natural pH was 9.87 & used a 50% citric acid and 50% distilled water solution to get the pH down to 4.72. You want a pH between 4.5-5.5 I used 14 drops of the citric acid pH buffer to lower the pH.


Benefits/Purpose of each ingredient

  • glycerin - humectant that hydrates the skin. In this formula it is being mixed with the xanthan gum soft to help prevent clumping. Xanthan gum clumps when it comes into contact with water. So if we mix it with glycerin first it helps prevent the clumping.

  • xanthan gum soft - thickener and gels jelly mask. Key ingredient to get that jelly texture.

  • liquid germall plus - preservative for aqueous formulas

  • bamboo stem powder - fine powder exfoliant

Substitutions;

substituting ingredients will change the final feel, viscosity, and overall effect of final product. percentages and formulating procedure may need to change with substitutions. these substitution suggestions are just suggestions and have not been tested to work.

glycerin - propanediol

xanthan gum soft - siligel, Caesalpinia Spinosa Gum, sepimax zen (you may need to use these at different percentages. So do experiments.)

liquid germall plus - euxyl k 903, euxyl PE 9010, tristate ECO, geogard ECT or other water soluble preservative of choice

bamboo stem powder - jojoba castor beads, jojoba pearls, pumice powder or other non water soluble exfoliant (sugar and salt will dissolve)
