All About Saccharide Isomerate (Cellynkage)

Updated: May 13, 2022

I want to start writing blog posts on some of my favorite ingredients, and maybe, not so favorites from time to time. If you seen my haul I posted about two months ago you may remember this ingredient called Cellynkage. Yeah, I've been obsessed with it lately and I wanna talk about it :)

Cellynkage INCI: Propanediol, Water, Saccharide Isomerate

I purchased cellynkage on lotion crafter. "Cellynkage™ marine ingredient is an exopolysaccharide (polymer of high molecular weight) sourced from Halomonas eurihalina, a microorganism found in a salt marsh in Spain, that helps rejuvenate mature skin by enhancing the direct communication among keratinocytes, and between keratinocytes and fibroblasts, and the signalling exchange between dermal and epidermal cells."

In simple terms, Cellynkage is said to help reconnect the communication between cells. As we age the direct communication between our cells weaken, but thanks to cellynkage you can help reverse signs of aging by helping those cells reconnect with each other.

Key benefits of Cellynkage

  • Rejuvenates mature skin Increase in skin’s smoothness

  • Increase in collagen density and improvement in the extracellular matrix

  • Increase in epidermal thickness, resulting in the decrease in appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

  • Increase in skin’s organization, leading to a more uniform complexion

This information is provided by lotion crafter. Except for my "In simple terms" section. I wrote that myself :)

Cellynkage is water soluble. It can be added into emulsions at 104°F or lower. It is recommended to be used in formulations with a ph of 5-8.5 & it's recommended usage rate is 2%. It is a pretty colorless ingredient so you don't have to worry about it changing the color of your finished product.

As much as I love the fact that suppliers offer descriptions and benefits of their ingredients, I always like to do my own research on the ingredients. So I decided to take it to google and look more into the ingredient Saccharide Isomerate. Since the INCI of Cellynkage is; Propanediol, Water, Saccharide Isomerate I can only assume that the anti aging benefits are coming from the Saccharide Isomerate.

As we age our skin loses the ability to hold on to moisture. Loss of moisture is a major cause of wrinkles, along with sun exposer and much more, but lets focus on dry skin today. Saccharide Isomerate can actually repair our skin to help it hold on to more water and can actually boost the effects and production of hyaluronic acid in the skin.

Saccharide isomerate is great at moisturizing the skin, but it does much more than that. Saccharide Isomerate is a 100% plant-derived carbohydrate complex, similar to that found in human skin. Our skin consists of 3 main layer; epidermis, dermis and tissue (hypodermis). The epidermis, being the top layer which contains lots of corneocytes attached together, first being formed in corneocytes, there are natural moisturizing elements called, NMF (natural moisturizing factor – a sugar and amino acid complex that protects the skin from drainage), these corneocytes are then protected by lipid barriers which also include sebum.

Since saccharide isomerate is a carbohydrate complex that is similar to our natural carbohydrates. When saccharide isomerate is used on the skin it can actually replace any loss carbohydates in the NMF (natural moisturizing factor) allowing our skin to hold on to more moisturizer.

Saccharide Isomerate is a water-retention magnet, It's an emollient, and has the ability to bind to skin proteins closely, capable of remaining on the skin longer than conventional softeners.

The outstanding properties of Saccharide Isomerate: • Instant water supply, deeply moisturizing lasting up to 72 hours. • Reduces irritation, reduces AHA’s side effects by 22% because the skin is making its own exogenous AHA’s. • In 3 minutes SI has 38% higher moisturizing ability than glycerin. • Stimulate gene expression to create a skin protection barrier keeping inflammatory skin issues at bay. • Improve the effectiveness of peeling and bring soft and moisturized skin.

Saccharide isomerate can also boost the abilities of hyaluronic acid by 66% as the saccharide isomerate repairs the area of the skin where the hyaluronic acid is stored. Saccharide isomerate can help your skin create more hyaluronic acid and can help keep it stored in the skin longer to bring more hydrated and youthful skin. Now I wouldn't go and replace hyaluronic acid with saccharide isomerate in your skincare routine. They both bring wonderful things to the table. If you are really suffering from dry skin use them together and I bet your skin will really feel a difference. I know mine has.

To sum it all up, the true star here isn't technically cellynkage, it's the ingredient found inside cellynkage, Saccharide Isomerate. If you are suffering from dry dehydrated skin, try this stuff out! Pair it with lots of other hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, propanedial, squalane, or any other hydrating ingredients your skin loves. Your skin won't only feel and look more moisturized, but it will also be repairing your skin allowing it to hold onto more moisture. It will help prevent wrinkles in the future, diminish the look of present wrinkles, and create a more youthful, glowing, and plumped complexion. It's so important to keep your skin hydrated. So even if you don't have winkles yet, but your skin is very dry, this ingredient really sounds like a lovely addition in hopes to further prevent your skin from dehydration and potential wrinkles in the future.

Saccharide Isomerate is also known as Pentavitin. You can also purchase saccharide isomerate under the name 72h Moisture on makingcosmetics.com

Personally I've noticed a huge difference in my skin. I've only been using this ingredient for about 2 weeks, but it's definitely done a good job. My skin loves to freakout during this time of year. It gets really dry, irritated and flaky. As soon as I started noticing my skin freaking out, it was also around the time I started experimenting and researching cellynkage. It couldn't have been a better time. I instantly started adding cellynkage into my daily skincare routine, and bam! My skin felt more hydrated and overall just felt great. My skin has been doing really well lately I haven't been wanting to use anything else on my skin, but my job is to literally test out different ingredients and recipes, so I'm gonna have to move on and test out something else. At least I know cellynkage is a win! Have you ever used cellynkage or any ingredient containing saccharide isomerate? Let me know what you thought of it :)
